He has been the artistic director of the Herman Miller Inc., the important design firm, for twenty years. He summarized the philosophy of the firm in the following points: what you create is important: design is an integrating part of the firm: the product has to be honest; you, yourself, have to decide what you want to do; there is always a market for good design. Notwithstanding his importance in the diffusion of design in the USA, he began his carrer as an architect. Born in Connecticut, after obtaining a degree at Yale, he lived for a few years in Rome. In Europe he met princes and exponents of the "International Style". After returning to the USA he worked as editor of the magazine "International Forum". He has overseen many important projects for Herman Miller Inc., in particular, a modular system of office furniture which reflects his architectural background and training.
